Re: Flights and Arrival - How does it work if M.E.F. pays? When/Where do we book our flights?

For Canada, the following website seems to usually have the best deals: https://buymytrip.com/ Usually it is best to check aircanada directly as well as I've been surprised how many times they offer the same or even lower fares and if you need to change later their policies are generally easier than...

How can I open a bank account in China?

The Chinese staff will take you and do it together with you at the bank.   To set up the bank account in China, technically you need to have the residency permit, but it is still possible for most areas to help get your bank account right away.  It is helpful to have your bank account quickly so th...

Flights and Arrival - How does it work if M.E.F. pays? When/Where do we book our flights?

Flights The current contract gives two options: 1 - You choose to book your own ticket (then you can get 6000RMB back after working 6 months).  For this, we recommend waiting until you have a pick up date for your visa. I have never heard of the embassy accepting the application for the visa and th...

Re: Usually How Long Are The Contracts?

We need to review each teacher and how they did, but if everyone is happy with a teacher, there is a very good chance we can renew contracts. The longest teacher with M.E.F. is in his 13th year now.

Are there any gyms? Dance? Yoga? Fungfu/martial arts?

This is area specific but yes these things are definitely available in China. Just let people know what you are interested in and with a little help you will be able to find such places. They are also a great way to make friends and get into the culture. There may be a language barrier at the beginn...

What are the facilities like? What’s the school like? new? old?

The kindergartens you will work in are mostly private kindergartens that parents pay more for as they have programs like the M.E.F. one and having an English teacher there. It is a bit of a competition for most of the kindergartens. It is normal to see a lot of Montessori type stations, gardens, bas...

How Is The Daily Commute?

Each schedule is different and it will depend where you decide to live. Some teachers live right beside the kindergarten they work at, but then some teachers also take a preference over being closer to friends or closer to the city, subway, the office, etc. so there is a balance. Generally teachers ...

What are my teaching hours?

Teachers teach a maximum of 30 teaching hours per week, maximum 40 hours onsite. Schedules are slightly different depending on the school and area. Generally teachers will start work at 8:30 or 9, have classes until around 11:30 or 12, then have classes again from 2:30 or 3pm until 5:30 or 6pm. Some...

What are the salary taxes like in China? Health Insurance fees?

TAXES Salary taxes are generally less than what needs to be paid in western countries. Each area has slightly different tax rates and ways they calculate.  Many of the teachers have been paying 9% but then in China the government can change regulations, so it is hard to know the exact number. Gener...

What are my starting expenses? How much cash should I bring to China?

Moving to China is definitely going to be a cheaper move than most people would pay to move to another city. There are going to be small fees for things like bedding, pillows, dishware, etc. for your apartment, and living expenses are comparatively low with most teachers eating every meal out and tr...
